How I Met Your Mother's (HIMYM) legacy will continue to live on as the This Is Us writers team up to create a spinoff of the beloved series.
Say what? Whether you like it or not, this is in fact true. How I Met Your Father is currently in development with 20th TV.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, This Is Us writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have inked a deal with 20th TV. HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will still be on board, but they will instead serve as the show's executive producers. Like Bays and Roberts, the This Is Us writer have worked alongside each other for several years.
How I Met Your Father will tell the story from a fresh perspective while featuring all new characters and storylines. Like the original, it will still share the story of how the protagonist met their significant other.
This isn't the first attempt at developing a HIMYM spinoff. In 2014, not long after the ninth and final season of HIMYM ended, Bays and Thomas teamed up with SNL writer Emily Spivey to launch the spinoff How I Met Your Dad. Greta Gerwig would have been the star with Meg Ryan on as the show's narrator. Unfortunately, the pilot wasn't picked up by CBS because the network wasn't entirely fond of the initial pilot script that Bays and Thomas presented them. CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler claimed that "there were elements of the pilot that didn’t work out."
What do you think of the HIMYM spinoff? Personally, I'm curious to see who they'll cast as the protagonist and what parallels can be drawn from the original series. Either way, I'm interested to see how it will all play out.
